A personal beginning
My interest in vulnerable dog breeds did not begin with population genetics or breed statistics. It began with individual dogs.
In 1989 I had Gemma, a German Shepherd. Later came Newfoundlands, and with them a much deeper understanding of what it means to preserve a breed rather than simply produce puppies. One of the dogs that stayed with me was Raycroft Socialite — Garfield — who won Best in Show at Crufts in 1991. For me, dogs like Garfield were not simply beautiful examples of a breed. They represented generations of decisions, knowledge and bloodlines that could very easily be lost.
Then, after a 24-year wait, Beau arrived in August 2015. That long gap made something very clear to me: when a breed becomes uncommon, finding the right dog is not simply a matter of looking harder. The choices available to breeders and owners can become genuinely limited.
What does 'vulnerable' actually mean?
When people hear the words vulnerable dog breed, they often imagine a breed on the brink of disappearing overnight. Usually, that is not how it happens.
The Kennel Club classifies British and Irish breeds with fewer than 300 annual registrations as vulnerable, and the Clumber Spaniel is currently among them.
A breed becomes vulnerable gradually as fewer litters are born over time, experienced breeders retire and some bloodlines fade out. Dogs that remain may become more closely related because there are fewer genuinely different breeding choices available.
A breed can still look quite healthy numerically while the usable genetic base underneath it is shrinking. That is why simply counting puppies or registrations never tells the whole story.
It is not solved by breeding more puppies
The obvious answer might seem to be: breed more dogs. But numbers alone do not preserve a breed.
If those extra puppies all come from the same small group of closely related dogs, the population may grow while its genetic diversity continues to narrow. Preservation means protecting enough healthy dogs, enough genuinely different bloodlines and enough capable breeders to give future generations options.
A simple way to picture it is as a family tree. If each new generation keeps coming from the same few branches, the tree may still look full, but underneath it the diversity is shrinking.
Population genetics matters
All of this sits within a field called population genetics. In simple terms, population genetics looks at how genes are distributed through a population and how that distribution changes over generations.
For dog breeders, the practical question is not merely, 'Are these two dogs related?' It is also, 'How much of the wider population is already represented in both of them, and what choices will this mating leave for the next generation?'
Coefficient of inbreeding, or COI, can help describe how closely related the parents of a litter are on paper. A lower COI can be useful, but it is not a magic number and it should never be treated in isolation. Pedigree depth, the size of the population, repeated ancestors, health, temperament and the actual genetic contribution of particular lines all matter.
In one of my own planning examples, a proposed mating produced a COI of around 2.3%. That number was useful information, but it was never the whole decision. A pedigree can look diverse on paper and still contain heavily used dogs further back. Equally, a carefully planned mating may look closer than ideal in one generation while being part of a longer strategy to retain a rare line and then branch out again.
Why geography can make the problem harder
For breeders in New Zealand, geography adds another layer. We are a small country with a limited population of many breeds. A dog may appear unrelated to the animals immediately around it, while still sharing much of the same ancestry once the pedigree is examined further back.
That is why international bloodlines can be so important. Frozen semen, imported dogs and genuine collaboration between breeders in different countries can introduce choices that simply do not exist locally.
But imported does not automatically mean diverse. The value depends on the actual pedigree and how different that dog or semen is from the population already available. Sometimes a distant sire cannot be assessed in person, so pedigree information, health results, photographs, video, breeder knowledge and the reliability of people involved become especially important.
Preservation needs collaboration
One of the greatest risks to a vulnerable breed is not always genetic. Sometimes it is human.
When a very small number of people control access to dogs, semen or breeding stock, bloodlines can disappear simply because they are not shared. Responsible breeders absolutely need standards, and breeding dogs should not be handed out indiscriminately. But protecting a breed and protecting personal control over a breed are not the same thing.
A vulnerable breed needs enough knowledgeable, capable people to carry it forward. That means mentoring new breeders, sharing information honestly, retaining more than one branch of valuable lines where possible and thinking beyond a single kennel or a single generation.
Real breeding plans rarely behave like diagrams
Breeding plans look beautifully tidy on paper. Real litters do not.
You may plan to retain several unrelated branches and then get one puppy of the sex you need. A puppy may be lost. A mating may not take. A litter may be smaller than expected, or it may produce six puppies of the same sex.
Sometimes the sensible response is to repeat a mating. Repeating a mating does not create new genetic diversity, but it can create more ways to use the same genetic diversity. If the first litter gives you only one suitable dog and the repeat gives you several suitable bitches, those bitches can later be taken to different lines, creating multiple future branches.
I have lived that unpredictability myself. In one Newfoundland litter we had two puppies, a bitch and a dog. Sadly, we lost the bitch at four days old. I had hoped to keep a bitch and the dog had already been promised to someone within 24 hours of birth. I repeated the mating. Ironically, the second litter produced six bitches. Suddenly, instead of having no bitch to carry that combination forward, there were several possible ways the line could be used.
Diversity is about preserving future choices
That is the part that is often missed. Genetic diversity is not simply a score to chase. It is about keeping options open.
Imagine there are three bitches in a country from three genuinely different lines. If breeders can introduce three dogs from another three genuinely different lines, those matings can be planned so the lines remain separate for as long as practical. Later, if numbers force the lines together, breeders still have choices about how and when that happens.
Sometimes production dictates the next move. If one branch produces only a single useful bitch and another produces only a single useful dog, the ideal plan may have to change. Sometimes the mating is repeated to increase the options. Sometimes the lines are combined sooner than expected. Preservation breeding is not about pretending those compromises never happen. It is about understanding their consequences and making the best informed decision available.
Health and temperament still matter
Genetic diversity does not excuse poor health, unstable temperament or dogs that are not fit for their breed's purpose. A rare breed does not need every dog bred from simply because numbers are low.
The challenge is balancing several things at once: maintaining enough diversity, protecting breed type, reducing avoidable inherited disease, retaining sound temperament and keeping enough breeding animals in the population to avoid painting future breeders into a corner.
That is why vulnerable-breed preservation needs experienced judgement as well as testing and pedigree software. Data can show us risks and relationships. It cannot make every decision for us.
Owners have a role too
Owners may think breed preservation is something that happens entirely inside kennels, but puppy buyers influence the future of vulnerable breeds as well.
Choosing breeders who health test appropriately, understand their pedigrees, remain involved with the dogs they produce and are willing to collaborate supports the people doing the hard long-term work. So does understanding that a responsible breeder may occasionally want to retain breeding rights, co-own a promising puppy or keep in contact because one dog could become important to the future of a small population.
Admiring a rare breed is easy. Preserving one takes decades.
More than admiration
Vulnerable dog breeds survive because people are prepared to think beyond the next litter. They study pedigrees, test health, import new genetics, repeat matings when necessary, retain multiple branches, share lines carefully and make decisions whose value may not become obvious for several generations.
That work is not glamorous, and it is rarely simple. But without it, a breed can quietly lose diversity long before the public realises anything is wrong.

Because the more people understand about what responsible breeding actually involves, the better chance these remarkable breeds have of still being here for future generations.
